Faure Gnassingbé Attends Washington Peace Accord Signing Between DR Congo and Rwanda

At the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Togolese Council of the Republic, attended the official signing ceremony of a peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda in Washington, D.C., this Thursday.
Gnassingbé’s presence underscores his role in a regional mediation mission mandated by the African Union to foster a lasting African-led solution to tensions in eastern DRC. The accord was formally signed by DRC President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The high-level initiative represents a significant step in stabilising the Great Lakes region, consolidating mutual trust, and creating an environment conducive to development and investment in strategic sectors vital to global value chains.

In recent months, President Gnassingbé has conducted intensive diplomatic consultations with regional and international stakeholders, in close coordination with the African Union, to encourage constructive dialogue and shared responsibility in the pursuit of peace. His discussions have involved key partners, including the United States, France, and Qatar, aimed at mobilising coherent support for African peace efforts.

The Washington ceremony not only symbolises a step towards de-escalation between the DRC and Rwanda but also recognises the importance of African-led mediation under committed regional leadership. The United States has supported all diplomatic missions, including those by the African Union, aimed at easing tensions in eastern DRC.

Speaking on behalf of the African continent, President Gnassingbé conveyed a message emphasising durable peace, open dialogue, human security, and regional economic integration - essential pillars for building resilient and inclusive societies.
