Benin is in a diplomatic crisis with Burkina Faso after serious accusations from Burkina Faso's President, Ibrahim Traoré. The latter affirmed that Benin hosts French military bases which orchestrate actions against his country. Following these declarations, the Beninese government reacted firmly by summoning the ambassador of Burkina Faso to Benin, this Tuesday, July 16.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Benin expressed its indignation at these “unfounded accusations”. According to reliable sources, the Burkinabe ambassador residing in Accra responded to the summons and was received by the Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shegun Adjadi Bakari. This meeting aimed to clarify the Beninese position and to refute Traoré's allegations.

The Burkinabe president declared last week: “No one will come and tell us that in Benin there are no French bases directed against us. We have the evidence at hand. » He insisted on the existence of two French bases in Benin, one in Kandi and the other near Porga, even affirming that “tracks have been redeveloped” to accommodate French military activities.

In response, Beninese government spokesperson Wilfried Léandre Houngbedji strongly criticized Traoré's statements, calling the situation "the hospital that makes fun of charity."Houngbedji recalled that terrorist incursions in northern Benin originate more from Burkina Faso.
